There might be no pointing and clicking but if you can get through the whole game without referring several times to GameFAQs (especially during the infuriating Petrified Forest section) then you’re a better player than us. The bigger issue for a modern audience is that this is a proper old school adventure game, with extremely difficult puzzles about which the game offers little or no hint. The story structure is organised around the Aztec concept of a four year journey through the afterlife and that leads to some awkward pacing, as the plot begins to meander too much after the stand-out second chapter and the denouement wanders slothfully into place almost without you realising.
But it is not, and never has been, perfect.įrom a plot perspective Grim Fandango is rather uneven and probably a bit too long. LucasArts and other adventure game developers had mastered such tricks decades ago, and in terms of its script, plot, and characters Grim Fandango is still amongst the very best ever made. Video gaming in general has become obsessed with storytelling over the last decade, but the sad truth is that not only are most games terrible at it but they never seem to have any genuinely interesting stories to tell or characters to bring to life. The voiceovers are uniformly excellent but perhaps the game’s greatest trick is making not only the strange setting and backstory work, but ensuring you care about the characters too. There is a lot of humour in Grim Fandango, with main character Manny Calavera being possessed of a wry wit – whether dealing with other characters or simply describing to you what he’s looking at. It just runs with it, as if it’s perfectly normal to be playing a calaca-like skeleton who needs to work off his debt in the afterlife by selling passing souls travel packages to the Ninth Underworld. We know how odd that sounds on paper but the game doesn’t waste any time trying to justify the peculiar mash-up of ideas. Just as importantly it moved away from straight comedy, with its bizarre mixture of film noir drama, Aztec mythology, and art deco art design. After more than a decade in service the point ‘n’ click SCUMM engine was completely abandoned, and in its favour Grim Fandango allowed you to directly control your player – with almost no on-screen interface.
